May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Let’s Talk About Mental Health in Real Estate

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to remind you that mental health matters—especially in a profession as demanding as real estate. As REALTORS®, you're often juggling busy schedules, client needs in high stress situations, financial pressures, and the constant hustle of staying ahead in a competitive field. It’s a rewarding career, but let’s be honest—it can also be mentally and emotionally draining.

So, what can associations, brokerages, and REALTORS® do to support mental wellness—not just this month, but year-round?

It Starts with Awareness

One of the best things we can do is talk about it. Candid conversations about burnout, stress, and mental health in general can help reduce the stigma and let those around you know that they’re not alone. You and your team - whether at your brokerage or local association, could consider hosting a casual lunch & learn to talk about common stressors. Topics like stress management, work-life balance, or anything that's specifically affecting the team could be a great way to introduce the conversation.

Here are some videos you could play to get the conversations rolling:

NAR also has some great tools, like articles and an ebook collection to help start these conversations - you can explore more on their mental health resources page here.

Make Time for Self Care in Small, Consistent (and Sustainable) Ways

Taking care of your mental health doesn’t always mean making huge changes. Mostly, it’s about making space for small healthy habits. Some of our favorite examples of that could look like:

  • Taking short breaks between showings for a walk or some fresh air
  • Using mindfulness or meditation apps like Calm or Headspace.
  • Making time to connect socially—not just professionally (or virtually)

Some brokerages even organize wellness challenges, gather for group yoga classes, or start daily step-count competitions. It’s not just about taking a break for fun—it reminds everyone to take a breath and prioritize themselves.

Create a Supportive Culture. Show You Care. Keep Talking About It.

Let’s also touch on what it means to build a support system within our workspaces. That could look like monthly brokerage support meetings, or simply having a trusted colleague to check in with when you need support - whatever that looks like for you, it’s important to know you don’t have to do it alone.

DB's, leaders, and office managers - you can help set the tone in the office by being open about your own experiences and challenges mental health. Not only does it show that you care, it helps to remove the stigma around these topics and encourages others to be open with their own experiences.

Showing your support can be done in small, simple ways. Try by sharing your favorite mental health resources or hacks with your team, not just this month, but all year round. It doesn't have to be formal; quickly sharing videos, quotes, your favorite health tips, recipes, articles, or anything mental health related shows the people around you that you're thinking of their well being.

If you're struggling to find resources, here are some of our favorite articles to get you thinking:

Mental Health Awareness Month is a great time to check in with yourself and the people around you. But the work doesn’t stop in May. We challenge you to keep building a culture where taking care of our minds is just as normal as taking care of our business & clients.

We’re in this together—and everyone's well-being matters.
