Women's History Month 2024
As we approach Women's History Month, it's essential to recognize the role women have played and continue to play in shaping the real estate industry. From breaking glass ceilings to forging new paths, women have made significant strides, transforming real estate in Washington State and beyond.
The demographic profile of REALTORS® offers a fascinating look into the evolving nature of our industry. According to the 2022 National Association of REALTORS® Member Profile, the majority of REALTORS® are women, with 66% of all members being female. This highlights not only the growing presence of women but also their indispensable contributions to the profession (source).
Historically, women have faced challenges and barriers in entering the real estate sector. Yet, pioneers like Corrine Simpson, a Washingtonian who became the first woman to join the National Association of REALTORS® in 1910, paved the way for future generations. Despite initial restrictions and gender biases, women persevered, demonstrating their resilience and determination (source).
The journey towards gender equality within the industry has been marked by significant milestones. In 1973, NAR® opened its doors to sales agents, leading to a substantial increase in female membership. By 1978, women surpassed men as a percentage of total membership, marking a profound shift in the industry's dynamics (source).
Today, women continue to break away from stereotypes and challenge conventions in both residential and commercial real estate. Organizations like the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW Network), National Association of Women in Real Estate Businesses (NAWRB), Women's Council of REALTORS® (WCR), and Women in Real Estate (WIRE) provide platforms for networking, mentorship, and advocacy, empowering women to thrive in their careers (source).
As we reflect on Women's History Month, let's celebrate the achievements of trailblazing women in real estate and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive industry. Washington REALTORS® have been electing Presidents for our organization since 1935. However, it wasn't until 1985 that the first woman President Melva Mabry was elected to office. Since then, we've been fortunate to have a slate of strong WR women leaders providing representation and encouragement for future REALTOR® leaders!
